Reason I CrossFit: Initially it was to see what all the rage was about. After years of running, I was ready to try something new but didn’t want to go back to the gym. It was certainly humbling at first (freaking double unders…) but became addictive quickly. I love the diversity and the intensity of the workouts. For years I was doing virtually the same workout in the gym and boredom was an understatement. CrossFit radically changed my workout perspective. Favorite Lift/WOD: Either Murph or FGB. My only hope in keeping up with the 20 somethings is to out endure them. I sure won’t do it on a max effort lift! Biggest Accomplishment: I don’t know that I have a “big” accomplishment. I think this CrossFit journey has been a series of daily improvements. My lifts are improving; I’m more disciplined in my diet and am still able to run at a reasonable pace. So all in all, I’d say the “big” accomplishment has simply been jumping in and loving CrossFit. What Keeps Me Coming: I CrossFit presumably for the same reason most do – the daily search for a new PR in whatever the WOD might be. I’ll admit however that the value of CrossFit for me is only 50% exercise related. The other half is the community which is something I would have never imagined walking into the box for the first time! Boxes Visited: I try and visit different boxes wherever I’ve traveled. I’ve been to boxes from Maine to Florida and over to Hawaii and several states in between. It’s been fun being a part of the CrossFit culture and seeing how different coaches work. It’s always good to come home though!

Reason I CrossFit: After years of running, I absolutely love the variety. Never the same day twice. Favorite Lift/WOD: Shoulder press, Cindy. Biggest Accomplishment: Went from 0 to 4 strict pull-ups in 3 months. What Keeps Me Coming: I love being surprised at what I can do. At 40, I'm unquestionably in the best shape of my life and doing things I never thought I would. Boxes Visited: Crossfit Charleston (SC) Mortal Crossfit (Georgetown, TX), Breakers Crossfit (N Myrtle Beach, SC)

Reason I CrossFit: Step above the normal gym routine. CrossFit is a way to push yourself way beyond your normal everyday workout. I was looking for something that would not only push me on my workouts, but keep me motivated long term. In the year and a half I have been coming to CrossFit I have seen continued progress and look forward to the next workout. At CrossFit Wake Forest, I have great coaches who push me way beyond what I thought I could do and they ensure that I am using proper technique for better results. Favorite Lift/WOD: Hard to choose a favorite lift, but I really appreciate the Olympic style lifting using the bumper plates. Most of these lifts I have either never done or at least since my college days. These are also the lifts I could not do at my regular gym. I also like the Hero WOD’s because they are a way to honor fallen Heroes and the workouts are always very tough. Biggest Accomplishment: Would be Double Unders. When I first started CF I couldn't string together more than two in a row. I can now get through most of the DU WODs unbroken...or at least minimally. What Keeps Me Coming: Seeing the improvements in my fitness level and the camaraderie at the box. It is great to look back at your personal benchmarks and see how much you have improved on your lifts and daily workouts. With CrossFit you also have the ability to compete with other boxes locally as well as participate in the CrossFit Games every year. We have a lot of fun with this at CF Wake Forest and participation is always high. Boxes Visited: I travel a lot for work and there are CF Boxes in almost every town I have been to….including San Juan, Puerto Rico. The CrossFit community is very welcoming and supportive everywhere I have been.

Reason I CrossFit: Builds physical and mental strength by pushing one beyond their comfort zone. Favorite Lift/WOD: Deadlift, Front/back squats Biggest Accomplishment: I haven't given up :) I've gotten stronger and developed more definition. What Keeps Me Coming: My husband loves the results; I love the results and sense of accomplishment, and the coaches/people at CFWF. Boxes Visited: None yet.

Reason I CrossFit: I was seeking an environment that keep me motivated and maximize results in the limited amount of time I have available to work out each week. CrossFit provides coaching, camaraderie and effectiveness. The intense workouts are a physical and mental challenge to overcome, so I have a nice feeling of accomplishment after every workout. Favorite Lift/WOD: Overhead squat because I'm not completely terrible at it. Biggest Accomplishment: Sun, moon and planets aligned and I linked 4 double unders. What Keeps Me Coming: The noticeable gains I make on a regular basis keeps me motivated to return and stay committed. The friends I've made at CFWF are one of a kind. Except for Robb. Stay away from that dude. Boxes Visited: I don't visit other boxes. When travelling, I'll do modified CrossFit workouts with equipment available.

Reason I CrossFit: I CrossFit because I love the cross-training aspect of it. It's never boring. Favorite Lift/WOD: My favorite lift is squats and my favorite WOD is anything that doesn't include running. Biggest Accomplishment: Biggest accomplishment is probably the ability to quickly recover from ACL reconstruction because of the shape I was in from doing CrossFit. What Keeps Me Coming: I keep coming back for the community and for the feeling I have AFTER a WOD. Boxes Visited: I've visited boxes in Myrtle Beach, Florida and San Francisco, but it's always great to come home.

Reason I CrossFit: To lose weight. I was very over weight and was looking for something that would get me motivated to get to the gym on a regular basis and to actually get a good workout in while I was at the gym. I had worked with a personal trainer 10 years ago and had great results, but the cost of a personal trainer was higher than what I wanted to spend. I had talked to a friend from Roanoke that was a “bigger” guy and his results had convinced me to try CrossFit. It helped that CrossFit was a fraction of the cost of what a personal trainer would have been. Favorite Lift/WOD: Most of the overhead lifts I don’t mind. Anything with burpees and running I despise. Biggest Accomplishment: Losing 85lbs in a little over a year and a half. I still have a long way to go, but it is going in the right direction. What Keeps Me Coming: The People. I was fairly new to the area and little did I know that I was going to meet such great group of people and become friends with many of them. I have had several corporate moves and I have met by far many more friends here due to CFWF. It is quite amazing how social some of us can be at 5:30 am in the morning before most people even think about crawling out of bed. Boxes Visited: Triangle CrossFit, CrossFit Confortare

Reason I CrossFit: FUN, new challenges every day, good people, desire to show myself what I'm capable of. Favorite Lift/WOD: Murph (half Murph for me) Biggest Accomplishment: Hmmm, haven't been here that long. Probably half murph. What Keeps Me Coming: The challenge. Just when I think I'm pretty good at something, I find out there's LOTS of room for improvement. Boxes Visited: CrossFit LKN

Reason I CrossFit: I joined crossfit because I was unhappy with my body/level of fitness...as much as I tried I would sign up for a gym (Planet Fitness, Peak fitness, YMCA, etc) go for 1 1/2 months and then never go back...I needed something that would make me want to go back to the gym on those days my body just wanted to stay in bed. Favorite Lift/WOD: Power Clean...this is a lift that takes concentration & many key parts in form to do correctly...when you hit all the key points at the correct time w/ good form the weight honestly flys up as if it was as light as a feather Biggest Accomplishment: My biggest accomplishment to this date is my new bench PR of 175lbs...it's strange that I'd pick this point because bench press is probably the workout that we do the least at our box. I was never able even lift 135lbs in my entire life. To know that in a workout that I may only do once every 2 or 3 months I was able to add 45lbs to my max speaks volumes towards the level of fitness I've been able to gain in my CF journey. What Keeps Me Coming: One of the things that makes me keep going back to CFWF is the competition...not so much against another person, but in the fact of trying to beat your previous PR. Also you cannot beat the community...you honestly become part of a family. Boxes Visited: Crossfit Exchange

Reason I CrossFit: For me CrossFit is the ultimate total body fitness experience that challenges and improves my overall strength and endurance every workout. Favorite Lift/WOD: Chipper, down and up or most anything with multiple movements for time. Biggest Accomplishment: Most days I feel a sense of accomplishment when I complete the entire WOD. But, it is always encouraging to better my time or weight. What Keeps Me Coming: I've participated in many sports, tried other fitness programs and enjoy running various distance races. However since starting CrossFit in January I feel stronger than ever and have gained confidence to conquer fears like skiing black diamonds and moguls this past winter. In the past there really wasn't anything I would do at 5:30 am, but now I look forward to starting my day with a 5:30 am CrossFit class. When you are surrounded by great people and instructors, it makes the 4:30 am wakeup call that much easier, and the rest of my day that much better. Boxes Visited: None to date.
